Time to go Apple Picking in Virginia
Now that the warm days of summer are welcoming the cool autumn nights, apples will be soon be reaching their peak. Coming up in October, we will be celebrating National Apple Month throughout the region with the many different varieties — abundant AND delicious. With over 100 commercial orchards throughout 16,000+ acres here in Virginia, the Commonwealth produces from five to six million bushels each year. Now that’s a lot of apples! Some local popular apples are: Fuji, Ginger Gold, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, and Rome.
If you would like to check out the local Virginia apple orchards, here are some great farms and orchards to go apple picking in September and October near Lynchburg, Bedford, and Charlottesville. Click below to check out my interactive map.

Virginia has such beautiful scenic drives through the countryside close to many apple orchards. Get outdoors and visit our area orchards, take time to stop for a while, have a picnic lunch, take in the views and even pick a few apples to take home and enjoy. I know you’ll be glad you did!
So exactly which apples are the best to pick and how to store — your apples:
▪ Apples should be firm and have no soft spots
▪ Apple flesh should be smooth and have no bruises
▪ Pick apples that are robust in color for their type
▪ Apples should have a fresh aroma
▪ Before using or eating, lightly scrub your apples in cool water
▪ Store your apples in a cool, dark place
